Bridge Watch Rating – Part 1 – The first part of a Transport Canada Accredited BWR Course

This is seven week course prepares individuals with no prior sea experience to be employed as safe and efficient workers on board a marine vessel. The focus on this course is safety training and basic vessel operations, to ensure students are prepared in case of an on-board emergency. Our program is enhanced with the following:

This is a six week course – Once candidates successfully complete both parts of the BWR program, obtain their STCW MED’s, Steering Testimony, and 3 months seatime, they have met all the requirements of TC to get their BWR Certificate!

STCW – Basic Safety (STCW-BS)

Marine Emergency Duties STCW-Basic Safety meets the IMO: STCW Regulation VI/ 1 and STCW Code Tables A-VI/ 1-1, 1-2, and 1-4, and requirements under TP 4957 in Marine Personnel Regulations in Basic Safety and in Marine Fire Fighting.

STCW – Survival Craft (STCW-SC)

Marine Emergency Duties STCW Survival Craft – This course is designed to meet IMO/STCW95 VI/2 Training in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, other than Fast Rescue Boats, and Canadian requirements under the Marine Personnel Regulations for training of marine personnel. Participants will advance their knowledge of marine survival craft and associated equipment as well as prepare to manage crew and passengers during abandoning of a vessel, surviving at sea, and being rescued

Helmsman – Steering Testimony

This training and assessment course comprises steering simulated ships under various environmental conditions and speeds, including slow speed manoeuvring, as well as navigating at the support level for bridge personnel.

The purpose of this course is to provide training for students in the sea operation of Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS).

Simulated Electronic Navigation 1: (SEN 1)
This course is designed to provide the participant with knowledge of the principles and skills required for the correct operation of navigational equipment. The course further provides the participant with thorough knowledge of the application of the Collision Regulations and principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch in a simulated environment while using electronic aids to plot the ship’s position and progress, and in a one-on-one ship situation to take necessary action to avoid collision without putting vessel at risk.

Fishing Master 4
16-18 weeks
The holder of the Fishing Master 4 Certificate of Competency may act as Master on board a Fishing Vessel of not more than 100 gross tonnage engaged on a Near Coastal or Sheltered Waters Voyage and as Officer in Charge of the Watch of a Fishing Vessel of any tonnage engaged on Near Coastal and Sheltered Waters Voyages.
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age on the day on which they receive the Fishing Master, Fourth Class Certificate of Competency and acquire the following sea service:
- After having reached 16 years of age, acquire at least 12 months sea service performing deck duties on one or more vessels that are 6 metres or more in length; or
- 15 years of age, for at least 12 months sea service acquired on fishing vessels that are 6 metres or more in length.
Candidates must provide the following certificates to the Examiner:
- Marine Emergency Duties DVS Training Certificate;
- Restricted Operator Certificate – Marine Commercial, radio operator certificate;
- Simulated Electronic Navigation, Limited Training Certificate; and
- Marine Advanced First Aid.
The Fishing Master 4 Certificate candidate must pass the following TC Examinations:
- Ship Construction and Stability, Level 1;
- Chartwork and Pilotage, Level 1;
- Navigation Safety, Level 1 ; and
- An oral examination on General Seamanship, after meeting all the requirements above.

SVOP Package

Our SVOP package consists of 4 courses designed for small commercial vessel operators.
This would include fishermen, guides, etc. that operate vessels up to 12 meters in length in any
commercial activity.
Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP)
4 days
The SVOP is a Transport Canada certification to operate a Small Commercial Boat less than 2 less than 5 Tonnes for Passenger and Cargo boats such as Crew boats, Work boats, Sport-fishing, Whale-watching, tugs, and less than 15 Gross Tonnes for Commercial Fishing boats up to 25 miles from shore.
Small Domestic Vessel – Basic Safety – (MED)

SDV-BS has replaced the MED-A3. Marine Emergency Duties, is concerned with responding to emergency situations and boating disasters and required by everyone working on a vessel and is the first course required before working on a vessel. It is also a requirement if you take the SVOP to be a Master of a small commercial vessel.
SDV-BS is for Crew Members, 15 years of age and over of non-pleasure vessels of up to 150 gross tons not operating more than 25 miles from shore, including, but not limited to: Commercial Fishing, Crew Boats, Work Boats and Tugs.
Restricted Operator Certificate – Marine (ROC-M)

The ROC license is a Canadian Federal government issued card that allows you to operate a marine VHF radio. ROC stands for Restricted Radiotelephone Operator’s Certificate and is required by:
Anyone using a marine VHF radio or other marine radios (each person on the boat who will use the radio needs their own card)
There are significant fines if you are found using a VHF or marine radio without your card.
Marine Basic First Aid (MBFA)

This course in emergency care provides general knowledge of first aid in the marine environment. Candidates are taught how to intervene in life-threatening emergencies including; unconsciousness, choking, rescue breathing, CPR, and deadly bleeding. This course is designed for people who work on the water and provides the participant with the ability to recognize and respond to injuries and emergencies.

Domestic Vessel Safety, DVS – MED

This course MED Domestic Vessel Safety (DVS) was developed to comply with the requirements of the
TC Marine Personnel Regulations on minimum training in personal survival techniques and fire fighting for Canadian seafarers sailing on board passenger vessels, workboats or fishing vessels engaged on a voyage in Canadian waters.
Note: This course replaces the old MED A1 and MED A2 courses.

Quality Management Program

This course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of requirements of the Quality Management Program (QMP) that exist in federally registered fish processing establishments.

Introduction to Food Sanitation, Hygiene, Risk
This course is an introductory course developed to orient and prepare food service workers to maintain a constant awareness of food safety and to ensure that proper procedures in the preparation and serving of food are followed.

Factory Freezer Trawler – Deckhand
2 weeks
This course provides an overview of the practical skills required to work as deckhand on FFT. This includes net construction and repair for individuals working in the fishing industry.

Introduction to Factory Management
2 weeks
A course designed to assist factory workers transition into junior management positions on the offshore fishing vessels. This program includes the following:
- Three days is designed for participants working in the food industry to gain an understanding of the role of Quality Control personnel in an effective Quality Assurance program.
- Two days designed to orient and prepare factory workers to maintain a constant awareness of food safety and to ensure that proper procedures in the preparation and handling of products are followed.
- Three days designed to provide participants with an understanding of the requirements of the Quality Management Program (QMP) that exist in federally registered fish processing establishments.
- Three days designed to give the participants the knowledge and skills to evaluate the sensory quality of Northern Shrimp at dockside and of the finished product.

Advanced Factory Management

A course designed to assist junior factory managers to transition into higher management positions on the offshore fishing vessels. This program includes communication and leadership skills as well as advanced CFIA, QMP, HACCP, etc.

Confined Space Entry

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of confined spaces and the ability to recognize hazards associated with working in a confined space environment. This course will meet the Confined Space Training Standard for Workplace Health and Safety.

Fall Protection

This course will enable the participant to identify and safely use the proper equipment for fall protection in the workplace. This course will meet the Workers Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) Act and regulations regarding Fall Protection.

Commercial Vessel Training

We have the capacity to deliver industry-specific training leading to employment opportunities in the following areas:
- Bulk carriers and tug carriers that service the mines
- Ice breakers and research vessels, such as Coast Guard vessels
- Tankers, such as those that deliver gasoline and oil to our communities
- Sealift industry, which brings goods to our northern communities in the summer months.
For the last four years, we have been delivering ongoing specific sealift training to employees of both sealift companies that service Nunavut, NSSI and NEAS.

Oil Tanker Familiarization (STCW)
2 weeks
This course applies to officers and ratings who will be assigned specific duties and responsibilities related to cargo and cargo equipment on oil or chemical tankers, taking into account section A-V/1 of the STCW Code to enable the participants to assume the duties and responsibilities relating to the loading, discharging or transfer of cargo and the operation of cargo equipment.

Kisarvik Program (Nunavut Only)
The Kisarvik Program has been designed to assist our students gain life skills and employability skills that will give them a foundation for entering a work environment, especially in the marine industry.
Our Kisarvik programs are delivered not only in Iqaluit but we also have a community based version.
Iqaluit Kisarviks are 12 weeks, Community Kisarviks are 10 weeks.
