Who can apply for training?
NTI or Nunavik Beneficiary as well as persons from the Northwest Territories.
Where is the training held?
Our courses are offered Depending on the facilities necessary for the course, training is held in your local community, a regional Centre in Nunavut, the Northwest Territories or in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Do I need a high school diploma to qualify for training?
Basic literacy skills are required for all courses, but we do not require a high school diploma/GED certificate for our introductory courses. However, advanced courses may have entrance requirements that include graduation from high school.
How long are the courses?
- Courses vary in length from one week and up to three years.
- All classes are offered during the day. Hours are 8:30 am – 3:30 pm.
- A training allowance is offered with most of our courses unless noted otherwise.
Off Shore Courses:
- Pre-training (2 weeks)
- Bridge watch Rating 1 (7 weeks)
- Helmsman (2 weeks)
- Bridge watch Rating 2 (7 weeks)
- STCW Advanced Emergency Duties (2 weeks)
- Deckhand Training (3 weeks)
- Watch-keeping Mate of a Fishing Vessel < 24m (4 - 5 Months)
- Fishing Masters Level 1-4 (6 weeks per module + Exam + Oral)
- Kisarvik Program (12-15 weeks)
Other Courses: Inshore Fishery and Processing
- SVOP Program (2 weeks)
- Inshore Fishery (4 weeks)
- Quality Management Processing (1-2 weeks)
How much do the courses cost?
NFMTC covers many costs involved with the courses. In some cases, this includes course fees, transportation to and from your home/ community to the course, accommodations, meals and a small training allowance to cover incidental costs. In all cases, the cost of course fees is covered – other eligible costs depend upon the funding for that course. Please talk to us if you have any questions.
How old do I need to be to apply to a NFMTC course?
- To qualify for training with NFMTC you must be 18 years of age or older.
- The age range for our Kisarvik Program is 18 – 30 years.
- The age range for our other courses is 18 – 45 years.
Why do I need to send my ID’s with my application?
There are times when we will start applications for some of your paperwork as soon as you have been accepted in the course. These require copied proofs of the originals to be submitted. Proper ID’s are required by Transport Canada.
How many students are in each course?
Most of the courses allow for 12 students; however, some courses such as Helmsman have a maximum of 4 students.

Who does the actual training?
NFMTC partners with the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Their instructors deliver our courses.
Where does the training take place?
Courses are held in Iqaluit at our Training Center unless noted otherwise. Most at our training Centre. Our community-based courses are held in various communities across Nunavut, Nunavik (Salluit, QC) and the Northwest Territories (Hay River) throughout the year.
How widely recognized is the training provided by the NFMTC?
All our instructors are recognized by Transport Canada and our programs meet Transport Canada requirements. Graduates from our training programs meet national and international training requirements.
Can I take more than one course?
You can. Once you successfully complete a course with us, you are encouraged to come back and upgrade your skills through our programs.
When do courses start?
We hold courses at various times of the year, generally in the spring, fall and winter. Keep checking Facebook and our website for upcoming courses.
How do I apply?
You can apply on-line through this site or get an application from the HTO, hamlet office or contact us to send you a copy.
How long does it take for my certificates to arrive after a course?
Certificates typically arrives within three months of completing a course.
Do you accept International Students?
At this time our Organization does not accept international applications.
Courses
SVOP
- What is the difference between the SVOP and the Inshore/SVOP courses?
- The SVOP course is 8 days long and covers topics in MED-A3, ROC-M and MBFA. There is no training allowance for this course.
Inshore Fisheries
- The Inshore Fisheries covers the above topics but with an additional component of chart-work and navigation, GPS usage and introduction to Gillnets and longlines. Training allowance is offered for this course.

- These courses are held in various communities across Nunavut throughout the year.
Pre-Training / Kisarvik Program
- What do I need to submit when applying for this course?
- You need to complete, date and sign the application form, reading assessment and fax or email it to us. These can be obtained from the EDO, HTO or the Adult Educator in your community. If you are in Iqaluit drop by our offices in Building 208, (Hunters and Trappers).
- You need to provide clear, readable copies of your ID’s (Birth Certificates, NTI, GN Photo ID, Driver’s License, Health card, etc.) as well as a copy of a RCMP Criminal records check.
- You also need to provide a letter from your community health center stating the results of your TB tests.
- How will I know if I’m successful in getting into the course?
- Applicants will be contacted via phone call or email. You must accept this offer for it to be valid. Ensure you submit a reliable phone number/ email at which you can be contacted.
Bridge-watch Rating 2
- How do I get into this course?
- Candidates successful in the Bridgewatch Rating 1 course and have at least 6 months sea time can advance to this course.
- Candidates must also provide a steering testimony with at least 8 hours of steering time. This steering testimony can also be acquired through the successful completion of the Helmsman course.
Helmsman Training
- How do I get into this course?
- Candidates who have successfully completed the Bridgewatch Rating 1 or 2 can advance to this course.
Watch-keeping Mate of a Fishing Vessel <24m
- How do I get into this course?
- Candidates who have successfully completed the Bridge-watch course and have at least 12 months of sea time can advance to this course.
Fishing Masters Courses
- How do I get into these courses?
- Prerequisites for this course are completing Bridgewatch rating 1 & 2, STCW – Basic Safety Courses.
- How long is this course?
- This depends on the specific Fishing Masters course you are pursuing. Typically each module of the Fishing Masters course is 6 weeks long. Please contact us to discuss your questions.
